Vivienne Westwood for Miss Piggy

GEAR, style By February 13, 2014 Tags: , , , , , , No Comments

Vivienne Westwood for Miss Vivienne Westwood for Miss Piggy – a match made in heaven. Our favourite couchon is back on the big screen, starring in Disney’s “Muppets Most Wanted,” which follows the Muppets on a grand tour throughout Europe. The European setting screamed romance to Miss Piggy, who’s been trying to convince her favourite frog to tie the knot for years. But what will the divine diva don for the all-new film, which hits theatres in the US March 21, 2014? Vivienne Westwood was commissioned to create couture designs for the fashion icon, including a white dress that would be perfect for a wedding … if one should actually take place.

“Vivienne Westwood is fabulous—just like moi,” said Miss Piggy. “When I asked her to design this wedding dress for moi’s new movie “Muppets Most Wanted,” she was thrilled and I was thrilled. The only one a bit ‘iffy’ about it was the Frog.”

In the film, Miss Piggy wears a Vivienne Westwood couture Long Ivory Court wedding gown, with corset detailing and paillettes made from recycled plastic bottles, accessorized with an ivory tulle veil. Piggy also entrusted the designer with additional looks for the film, including a Vivienne Westwood couture Harris Tweed houndstooth check coat and matching beret worn in a scene set at Tower of London. Miss Piggy also chose a long silver hand-embroidered floral lace gown for a very special number in the film.

So the question on everyone’s lips remains: Will we see Miss Piggy marry her beloved Kermie in “Muppets Most Wanted,” and will she finally get to wear her dream Vivienne Westwood gown down the aisle?

“You’ll have to see the movie to find out,” insisted Miss Piggy.

Everything is coming up Orchid in 2014

GEAR, style By January 16, 2014 Tags: , , , , , , , No Comments

Radiant OrchidSo I have a confession to make, I’m a complete colour geek. In fact, when Pantone announced their colour of the year for 2014 I actually stayed up until 1am to catch the news. It’s sad but true. Thankfully I wasn’t disappointed because the colour they chose is gorgeous – Radiant Orchid.

“Radiant Orchid blooms with confidence and magical warmth that intrigues the eye and sparks the imagination. It is an expressive, creative and embracing purple – one that draws you in with it’s beguiling charm. A captivating harmony of fuchsia, purple, and pink undertones, Radiant Orchid emanates great joy, love and health.” – from the Pantone website.

Historically speaking Pantone’s colour of the year choices have made major impact on fashion, home decor, and even graphic design. (Remember Honeysuckle in 2011, and Emerald Green last year; Pantone called it). At the recent fashion previews for Spring 2014 Radiant Orchid was spotted on the runways at both Max Mara and Missoni, which almost guarantees it will trickle down to mass market fashions as well.

Personally I’m loving this new hue, it’s about time that we see something fresh and vibrant hit the fashion scene as opposed to the deep jewel tones and heavy makeup that has been popular for the last few seasons. A nice bonus; purple is one of the most universally flattering colours out there, so this really is a trend that everyone can participate in. If you have fair skin, lean towards cooler lilac based colours, and if your skin is darker pick a deep rich shade of orchid.

So what’s the best way to wear this new hue? If you are feeling bold you can wear it all-over, but I will probably lean towards a few statement pieces in Radiant Orchid. I’m already envisioning skinny jeans, with a  light orchid coloured cardigan, and a cluster of vintage broaches (maybe a beehive too?). Or maybe I’ll get a nice cross-body bag in a deeper orchid shade and pair it with my spring/summer dresses. For me the key to participating in a trend is to balance my investment. A good bag will be with me for a long time so I can splurge, if I decide to go for Radiant Orchid pants though, I’ll probably get a budget friendly pair.

Not sure what shades play well with Radiant Orchid? You are safe working with navy, brown, or even a deep violet. If you want to create a real statement with your outfit consider pairing it with teal, turquoise, or last year’s favourite; emerald.

If you still aren’t convinced or ready to go all out with the trend, how about starting with your makeup? This is a great colour to wear on your lips or tips – in fact you might be able to do both for a polished monochrome look. However you style it, do give this trend a try, and then tweet us a pic – we’d love to see what you came up with!

How to Rock Your Winter Coat

GEAR, style By November 5, 2013 Tags: , , , , , , , , , , , , No Comments

UrbanMommies had the pleasure of taking part in one of the smartest, inspired fashion events of the season.  Coquitlam Centre set up an area divided into four sections.  Stylist Catherine Dunwoody pulled coats for each of the mall’s stores and categorized them.  After filling out a quick questionnaire we were directed to a section of coats that fit our style personality: Uptown Girl, Jane Bond, Urban Casual and Provocateur.  Despite being pegged as an uptown girl (are you shocked?!) I wandered the racks and found no less than 5 coats I needed.  Catherine Dunwoody pulled bags, hats and glasses in order to style us, and as we are sharing her tips below on how to rock your winter coat.  Not only did the exercise help me discover new styles, but stores that I haven’t visited in years blew me away with fabrics, designs and reasonable price points.  Well played, Coquitlam Centre.

15 Back to School Essentials

GEAR, style By August 6, 2013 Tags: , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , 1 Comment

I’m one of those parents that can’t stand the end of summer.  The thought of school lunches and early wake-ups makes me want to cry.  Even the notion of some alone time while the kids are in school doesn’t make me want to celebrate.  But back to school shopping?  Now you’re talking.  I love the new beginnings – a change to streamline routines and try to finally nail the healthy littler-less lunch.  We can always dream.  Here are our 15 back to school essentials for this year.

1.  Reminiscent of old-school TV dinner trays or modern Bento boxes, the PlanetBox ensures food doesn’t get all mixed up and helps you include healthier options for the pickiest eater.  The magnets add a personal flair.  Also available at Pottery Barn Kids with personalized carry bags.

2.  Microwave, dishwasher safe and waterproof.  Music to a parents’ ears!  Not having to raid the lost and found box at school every week?  Even better.  I just ordered Mabels Labels‘ Ultimate Back to School Pack. The kids got to choose their own personal designs and even prompted them to clean out their closet.

3.  Sanrio.  It’s all about Sanrio.  I just got 2 new Sigg Hello Kitty water bottles.  Always BPA-free, these designs also allow you to write a note to your kids in the thought bubble.  My preference is to have the kids write a note to me, as I won’t give these bottles up.  Sorry, boys.

4.  We know that UrbanMommies is a big fan of manners for kids.  Let’s not stop at school.  Funkins are colourful, fun napkins made just for our little robot lovers and fishermen.

5.  As you register the kids for extra-curricular activities, don’t forget to include down time.  The Babba Box is a subscription service that provides hours of after-school and weekend creativity.  Combine it with Disney’s new Story app and we’re willing to bet you double their fun.

6.  I always went to school with personalized pencils from Lillian Vernon.  You despise me now don’t you?  And now they are in pink.

7.  WoolFelt iPad sleeve on etsy.  Stunning.

8.  Fancy patterned binders help our kids feel like individuals.  Leave it to Martha Stewart to come up with epic patterns.  Available at Staples.

9.  Boys: In the summer I can’t get my boys to wear pants.  In the fall I can’t get them to wear pants without holes in the knees.  Good news: Iron Knee pants from Land’s End.  The revolutionary interior knee patch will allow them to fall on their knees all the time without you having to deal with seeing their kneecaps at the end of the day.  Now we just need to stock up on Tide Pods how to deal with the grass stains.
10.  Girls: The new Binksy & Bobo reversible tie dress.  Spills can be instantly hidden with a flip.  And it’s Canadian. I need one in my size please.

11.  Picmonkey.  It’s all about picmonkey.  They’ve just released some back to school themes, overlays and nostalgic school effects.

12.  Zoo Lunches from Skip Hop acts as a lunch bag and doubles as a little friend.  Available at Snuggle Bugz.

Marshalls Comes to Canada

GEAR, style By April 9, 2013 Tags: , , , , No Comments

I was a bit of a fashionista from early on.  And a good shopper.  Ski trips to Bangor, Maine always included a three-hour escapade to Marshalls, where my Vuarnet shirts, Esprit cords and Ralph Lauren polo shirts were found.  (It was the 80s).  Finally the day has come!   Marshalls will expand across Canada this year with 13 new stores opening from Vancouver to Montreal, offering its wide selection of big brand fashions, accessories and boxed footwear for the entire family at well below department store prices.  Can’t talk.  Hyperventilating with excitement.

In addition to apparel and accessories for the whole family, every Marshalls boasts a huge selection of more than 8,000 pairs of designer and brand name boxed footwear. (Still hyperventilating).  At 55,000 square feet, the new Toronto flagship store at Yonge & Gerrard is the largest Marshalls store in Canada. As of August 2013, all Marshalls stores will offer home and décor along with apparel and accessories.

The ‘Marshalls Comes to Canada’ store address and locations:

Toronto, ON – 382 Yonge Street
Vancouver, BC – 8137 Ontario Street
Winnipeg, MB – 110 – 600 Empress Street
Hamilton, ON – 1161 Barton Street East
London, ON – 3165 Wonderland Road South
Mississauga, ON – 3126 Argentia Road
Markham, ON – 8675 McCowan Road
Abbotsford, BC – High Street

So if anyone wants to do a Via Rail fashion shopping tour with me from coast to coast, I’m in.  And I promise my style has matured since the ’80s.

Central Park Wicker Picnic Basket from Tiffany & Co.

GEAR, style By February 8, 2013 Tags: , , , , , , No Comments

Pass the cucumber sandwiches please.  Not sure that fried chicken is appropriate in this instance.  Imagine: New York City.  Paris. London, perhaps.  A warm spring day and kids skip rope as you arrange a huge blanket on the soft grass.  You look around in anticipation of your date strolling along the path as you open the basket (Your Central Park wicker picnic basket from Tiffany & Co. of course) only to find a handwritten poem from the aforementioned gentleman.  How in earth’s name did he manage that?  Damn.  He trumped your surprise.  But the poem is incredible.  He was probably inspired by the basket.

Made in natural wicker and with Tiffany blue leather, the nostalgic basket contains Tiffany Weave china and sterling silver cheese knife set, cork screw, bottle stopper, crystal tumblers, cutting board, striped canvas napkins and wool blanket.  Poem, park and laughing children not included.

$3,950  at www.tiffany.ca or by calling 1-800-265-1251.

Watch them Play with Peekaboo Beans

GEAR, style By February 5, 2013 Tags: , , , No Comments

When I think ‘play’, I don’t imagine kids in stuffy suits.  As the mom as two highly sensitive kids, I recognize the need for soft fabrics, non-itchy labels and room for movement.  I adore the versatility, easy on-and-off functionality and awesome style of Peekaboo Beans.  The reflective tapes on many of the pieces provides safety and peace of mind and the mix and match capabilities also make getting dressed a breeze – even when they insist on pairing their outfit themselves.  Founder Traci Costa loves “the unquestionable innocence and curiosity of children, little bare bums and pure laughter.”  She recognized that parents should spend their time lavishing kids with love – not struggling with tiny snaps and tiny neck holes!

Oh – and the adorable clothes are delivered to you with a purple and green wrapping theme – complete with jelly beans.  For the kids of course.. ; )  www.peekaboobeans.com
