Sick Infants – Judging the Severity of Illness

baby, FAM, health By January 9, 2010 Tags: , , No Comments

During the first 2 years of a child’s life, most parents feel uncomfortable and inadequate in determining how sick their infant is during a cold or other infection. Since the sick infant can’t talk, he can’t help much with the diagnosis. How sick your child looks or acts is much more relevant than the level of fever. Also, a child may look much better 30 to 40 minutes after the fever is reduced with medicine.  When should you call your child’s health care provider?

Green One Bags

GEAR, home By January 6, 2010 Tags: , , , 2 Comments

firenzie_blueDenimOne of our resolutions this year is to proudly announce to the grocery store clerk… ‘no thank you.  I don’t need bags.  I have brought my own.’  Little did we know that few cloth bags are created equal.  First there are those with skinny handles that cut into your hands or shoulder, then the crappy ones that develop holes, and finally, there is the ‘useless’ group – too small for any real groceries and good for only 2 wine bottles (what use is that?).  UrbanMommies tried the stunning organic GreenOne Bag and we were thrilled beyond belief.

What to Wear When Traveling with a Child

LIVE, play, ROAM By January 4, 2010 Tags: , , , 1 Comment

There are a couple of travel stories about me as a toddler that are often repeated in my family.  One is how when we were in Scotland, I dumped a chicken dinner on my mom’s lap when she was wearing her white pantsuit.  Another is how on a plane one time I spilled a full glass of orange juice on her lap while she was wearing her white pantsuit.  Now that I’m a parent and a traveling one at that, I have a question, “What on Earth was she thinking wearing a white pantsuit?”

Should I register for my baby shower?

baby, FAM, grow, LIVE By January 1, 2010 Tags: , , , , 1 Comment

A lot of moms to be wonder if it’s acceptable to register gifts for their baby shower.

Not only is it acceptable but it is also encouraged. Registering helps your family and friends make sure that they are purchasing what you need. It’s safe to say the last thing you want to deal with after you’ve had your baby is to drive all over your city exchanging your gifts because you’ve received 4 ear thermometers.  Register for everything that you want and need, even the big items.   It is very common for guests to go in as a group on a present.

Shopping online is an easy way for others to get presents.

Kwanzaa

EAT, holidays By December 29, 2009 Tags: No Comments

Kwanzaa is a week-long celebration held mostly in the United States honoring universal African heritage and culture.  It is observed from December 26 to January 1 each year.  The principles of Kwanzaa should be shared and circulated throughout all cultures, as these philosophies promote peace, community-building and self-growth. Kwanzaa consists of seven days of celebration, featuring activities such as candle-lighting and libations, and culminating in a feast and gift giving. Each day, one of the seven philosophies is contemplated.
