EAT, entertain By September 15, 2023 No Comments

There’s a slight chill in the air and green leaves are beginning to transform into a melody of gold, red, and orange. Summer’s end may be bittersweet, but fall has plenty to offer, especially when it comes to beer. Read: Octoberfest Beer Gardens (or Oktoberfest Bier Gartens for our European readers!). We’ve rounded up five delightful beers (and the like) that perfectly compliment the start of autumn.

Derek’s Red Hot Sauce – Kitchen Heat, Homemade

EAT, entertain By July 7, 2020 No Comments

This recipe for hot sauce is my husband Derek’s favourite. There are so many ways to add spice to life, that right now are kindof impossible to do, like travel, new experiences, theatre, music and art – why not start in the kitchen? This is a great pandemic kitchen trick to learn, and can save a fortune in buying sauces. Adding a little spice to life is always fun, and so is making delicious condiments yourself. Hot sauces have become quite popular, with a wide variety of options available on the market including curated subscription boxes.  I love making things home made wherever possible, and this recipe makes that a cinch.

Spinach Salad – A Party Favourite

entertain By August 12, 2019 No Comments

This spinach salad was a party favourite growing up. We always dried the spinach in a pillowcase after washing it for big parties. As a little girl I got to do the shaking. Now, I’m more of a salad spinner person, but this brings back some fun memories that make me smile when I’m getting a big salad ready for a party.

Filipino Spring Rolls

Filipino Spring Rolls

EAT, entertain By July 21, 2019 Tags: , , , , , No Comments

When the kids were tiny, we hired a live-in caregiver from Baguio in the Philippines and she has graced our life with love and kindness ever since. Before every special birthday party or event, I would come home from work to find a freezer full of amazing filipino spring rolls, and the kids and I would devour them early in any party! The rolling of these gems always eluded me, so I sat down with her and we all learned proper spring roll rolling technique together.

This Cocktail Will Make Your Summer

eat, EAT, entertain, self By July 3, 2019 1 Comment
Two summers…actually, three summers ago (my sense of chronology is on permanent mom mode), I had an amazing ‘mobile’ herb garden that we planted and grew in a bunch of mismatched pots on our deck. When we moved in to our first home, our tiny garden was totally professionally landscaped and we didn’t dare touch it, so this little collection of herbs was our attempt to curate and craft something of our very own in the backyard. Because I am a terribly undomestic goddess, I mostly just admired the herbs from afar (my husband trained as a chef in his twenties, so he’s in charge of the kitchen), until one day I decided to get experimental and leverage my love of cocktails to create a truly beautiful and very simple recipe.

Mommy Mixology: 5 Summer Cocktail Recipes

entertain, Mommy Mixology By June 6, 2019 No Comments

Summer! The time of year that we take a dip in a clear, cool swimming pool and grill burgers and wild asparagus on fired-up barbecues. It’s also the optimal time to get the freshest ingredients to make refreshing summer cocktails! There are so many delicious options!

If you are planning a summer event and you want to treat your guests to more than basic beer and wine, a few signature drinks are cool and memorable. You’ll also keep the headache of in-the-moment prep to a minimum by choosing drinks that can be prepared ahead of time with multiple servings, have similar or complementary ingredients, and will work with a variety of appetizers. Set yourself up for entertaining success! For those who prefer small gatherings with a few close friends (or just you and a good book!) fruit-based summer drinks are still the perfect choice.

Throw a Football Party

How to Throw a Football (Party)

EAT, entertain, family meals By November 24, 2016 No Comments

Yeah, no. We’re not even going to try and throw a football ourselves, let alone teach someone else how to do it. But the entertaining part and talking about how to throw a football party is a snap. Superbowl and Canada’s Grey Cup conjure images of hot dogs, nachos and chips, but that kind of tailgating is a little boring. Let’s deconstruct the normal and start with a hearty, versatile ingredient that warms even the coldest of bellies during football season. I give you: pasta. We created two fun recipes inspired by football traditions, but with a bit of a Canadian twist!
