Fall and Winter Style for Kids From Noch Mini

I adore fall and winter. Not so much for the weather (I’m personally more of a summer gal) but for the fashion! Living in Vancouver, fall and winter fashion stretches all the way from fall to spring. Fall clothing for kids is just as fun (if not more) than the clothing for adults.

At Urban Mommies we are currently loving kids clothes from Noch Mini, a New York based children’s line designed by Jina Jang. Noch believes in protecting the environment and our children’s bodies by using only certified organic materials and low-impact dyes.

Check out the Noch Mini Fall/Winter 2014 Lookbook for great looks for your kids for the fall.

How to raise your mom style game

FAM, self By November 5, 2013 Tags: , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , No Comments

When people ask me what do for a living, I usually say, “I’m a fashion writer and blogger”. More often than not, this is followed up with, “oh, you are a mom blogger?” The thing is, being a mom isn’t what defines me or my dress sense. I’m an entrepreneur and fashion blogger, and I happen to be a mom. To me being fashionable doesn’t stop being an option when you have kids. If you had a sense of style before, it’s still there, just a little dormant now.

Chooze Shoes for Kids

GEAR, style By October 3, 2013 Tags: , , , , , 1 Comment

What makes CHOOZE shoes different?  Could it be their subtle or bold variations or their unique and beautiful look? The answer is yes. Being unique is something to be proud of and CHOOZE is dedicated to its mission of elevating and empowering individuality.  CHOOZE shoes are matched but never the same.  What is that? The shoes don’t match?  People rarely wear matching socks anymore, so why not move on to two different shoes? By encouraging people to wear two different shoes, CHOOZE builds confidence and creativity in individuals, creating an open mind and allowing them to be open to thinking differently and being open to new ideas.

Central Park Wicker Picnic Basket from Tiffany & Co.

GEAR, style By February 8, 2013 Tags: , , , , , , No Comments

Pass the cucumber sandwiches please.  Not sure that fried chicken is appropriate in this instance.  Imagine: New York City.  Paris. London, perhaps.  A warm spring day and kids skip rope as you arrange a huge blanket on the soft grass.  You look around in anticipation of your date strolling along the path as you open the basket (Your Central Park wicker picnic basket from Tiffany & Co. of course) only to find a handwritten poem from the aforementioned gentleman.  How in earth’s name did he manage that?  Damn.  He trumped your surprise.  But the poem is incredible.  He was probably inspired by the basket.

Made in natural wicker and with Tiffany blue leather, the nostalgic basket contains Tiffany Weave china and sterling silver cheese knife set, cork screw, bottle stopper, crystal tumblers, cutting board, striped canvas napkins and wool blanket.  Poem, park and laughing children not included.

$3,950  at www.tiffany.ca or by calling 1-800-265-1251.

Abeego Flat Wrap Covers for Food

GEAR, home By October 2, 2012 Tags: , , , , , , No Comments

Au revoir, plastic wrap.  Sayonara tinfoil.  These Abeego Flat Wrap Covers for Food are used in the same way, but they’re far safer, effective – and reusable. Made with beeswax, tree resin and jojoba oil infused in a hemp/cotton fabric, these all natural rectangle shaped flat food wraps do not leach nasty chemicals into your food.

The warmth of your hands as you press the wraps around your cucumbers, bowls, cheese or half-eaten baguette (as if it’s not always totally gone) allows you to shape it easily.  The stiffen when cooled.  Oh, and they are compostable, which will make my veggie gardens happy as well.  Lavish and Lime

GEAR, home By October 2, 2012 Tags: , , , , , , 1 Comment

As a university student I invested in metal dishes.  They were durable and stylish and I hadn’t been able to find similar funky hand-painted designs since.  My search is over with these gorgeous Eva Bird bowls and cups sporting a dash of hand painted colour. Highly durable, non-leaching and recyclable stainless steel cups and bowls with hand painted bird designs in red, green and varying shades of blue.  Lavish and Lime

style advice for busy moms

Michelle Addison’s Style Advice for Busy Moms

LIVE, nourish By September 21, 2012 Tags: , , , , , No Comments

Michelle Addison has impeccable style and perfect advice for busy Moms.  After cultivating experience in the fashion and film industry she has become one of Vancouver’s fashion experts.  Her ability to decipher trends, convey style, and trim closets down to the essential key pieces, led to a thriving personal styling career.  Addison lives in Vancouver with her husband Nick and her two year old daughter Stella.  UrbanMommies was granted an exclusive interview.

UM:  You mention that individuals are their own brands.  If a Mom stays at home, how would you style her?  Because we know that she’s still an individual with her own branded style.

MA: I would style a stay-at-home mom with the priority of “has to be easy to wear”,  non complicated style is best when being a full-time mom. I was a stay-at-home home for a year and mainly wore things I could sit cross-legged in!! Often women come to me and say “i want to be stylish but don’t want to put in the time” I would suggest eliminating all threatening items: ugly shoes disguised as really comfortable, pregnancy items that don’t apply when not pregnant,  lululemon stretch pants worn as a fashion trend etc. Having a great wardrobe that all works together makes getting dressed in the morning easy. Eliminating the bad and only keeping the good help with this process…as you don’t have “the bad” as go-to’s.

UM: My closet is filled with amazing pieces that I never have time to ‘style’ myself (without paying a nanny a fortune in childcare).  How would you help a busy mom ‘shop’ and style her closet and put quick outfits together?  Polaroids?  Lookbooks?

MA: I work by appointment at The Bay downtown. It’s so easy to book an appointment, come down, spend a couple hours(like, 1-2) and come away with a whole selection of items that all work together, fit properly and are fully endorsed by someone who may pay a little more attention to fashion that you might. I also have a package called “tied together” that allows me to come over to your house and put some outfits together with items you already have and take pictures so you remember what goes with what. I send you a little book so you can have it on hand for your reference. This comes in handy at fashion week…barring that :)… work trips, or holidays, or everyday suggestions. This takes around an hour and a half…just enough time for your kids to go to the park and back.

UM: Is it necessary to revamp a closet every season?  How can you work with a stylist to help you do this in the most cost-effective way?

MA: It  isn’t necessary to revamp your “entire” closet every season. My philosophy is cleanse, build the basics and insert a few trends each season. Working with a stylist can save you thousands on making ill-purchases that you never wear. When working with a client, I have the benefit of knowing their personal style and recommending pieces each season that go with what they already have. Shopping seasonally is great for saving money and time. Women in their thirties can start building quality wardrobes that will last a decade by adding a few investment pieces each season. A great coat, a good purse, a classic boot etc.

Dressing Your Boys

GEAR, style By July 30, 2012 Tags: , , , , , , , , , , , , 5 Comments

Some boys will only wear ‘Athletic Clothing.  Stripes, logos, numbers.  Hmmm.  Not always a stylish choice for boyswear.  Why not have a rule, shall we, that sports clothes are for, well, playing sports, and cool, cute, hip clothes are for going out in public without a ball/racquet/bat in hand.  I’ve never understood the hockey jersey thing (especially for grown men and women.)  Why would you wear a boxy jersey bearing a professional hockey player’s name on the back?  Your own name, ok…  Same opinion for little boys’ sporting attire.  If you earned it by playing a season of T-Ball, sure.  But to put Walmart’s logo and year of inception on his back because you think your kid looks athletic?  No.

What’s in my bag? Ann Gallery

beauty, GEAR, style By July 18, 2012 Tags: , , , No Comments

We spoke to PR Pro Ann Gallery and convinced her to ‘spill’ the contents of her stunning Goyard monogrammed purse.  She’s lucky my initials are different or I would have nabbed it.

1.  The cult hair care line Black 15 in 1 recently launched travel sizes of its amazing Twice a Week Shampoo and Conditioner and Miracle Hair Treatment – I keep the 3 Oz hair treatment spray in my purse so things don’t get too out of control on drizzly Vancouver days.

2.  My bag by Goyard.

3. Shortly after we met, my husband Ian gave me a lovely Shamrock Charm in honour of my Irish roots (or was it my feisty red-headed nature?!).  The charm lives on my key chain for good luck.

4.  I can’t get enough of Steaz sparkling green tea, especially the Raspberry and Lemon Lime flavours.  So refreshing!

5.  I’m addicted to CND Shellac manicures and keeping Solar Oil in my purse and using it regularly on my nails and cuticles maintains my mani for even longer than the promised 14 days!

6.  I keep in my purse a quick, fun and portable game like Spot it! to help kill time with my 10 and 11 year old sons between appointments, practices and playdates.

7.  I’m a lip gloss junkie and the sparklier the better! On a recent trip to Japan I picked up RMK’s Gloss Lips N in Holographic Orange and now it’s a staple in my purse.  I also snapped up RMK’s 15th Anniversary Cheek Palette – it makes me smile every time I open the case and it gives me a sun-kissed glow.

8.  Like most people, practically every photo we have is on an electronic device but I always keep a hard copy of this picture in my purse.  I love my boys even when they’ve been away at camp and haven’t bathed for two weeks!

9.  Between visiting family in Toronto and Montreal and a very busy travel schedule for work, it feels like I spend half my life on a plane!  I now just keep in my purse a merino wool Bliss Wrap by Icebreaker – it’s perfect for travelling as it’s chic, cozy and versatile and looks good with everything from jeans to my new favourite summer maxi dress.
