Bravado Nursing Bra

baby, FAM By May 15, 2010 Tags: , , No Comments

Bravado Nursing BraTheir slogan?  “Bras fit for Breastfeeding”  We agree.  These fabulous nursing bras don’t stretch, fit well, and the one-handed-clasp-release is quite well facilitated. Bravado Designs‘ products are worn and loved by moms worldwide, including celebrity moms like Angelina Jolie, Sarah Jessica Parker, Jennifer Garner and Jessica Alba. Started by two moms (one is a lactation consultant), their website is also a wealth of breastfeeding info.  Oh, and they only use real moms in their photographs, because they “don’t think they need models to make breastfeeding beautiful”.  It’s a like.  www.bravadodesigns.com

Does swaddling help babies sleep better?

baby, FAM By March 1, 2010 Tags: , , , , , , , , 1 Comment

Q – I have a 4.5 month old son, whom I swaddle for all naps and bedtime. He does not sleep for longer than 3 or 4 hour stretches – much to our fatigue/frustration and I am nervous about weaning him out of his swaddle as the lack of sleep is difficult to deal with let alone what it would be like to have him swaddle-free (He is able to free himself of the swaddle most times when he wakes up and is left for a bit in his crib). I tried going without the swaddle for 2 naps and he kept himself up and cranky by grinding his hands into his eyes. I am nervous that I might be affecting his development as he does not roll over yet etc. Is there a maximum recommended age for swaddling and if you are weaning from the swaddle, is there a recommended process? Any help would be much appreciated – thanks!

One Year Old and No Teeth

baby, FAM By January 24, 2010 Tags: , , , , No Comments

Q: My baby is one year old and has no teeth. Should I be worried or is he just late teething?

A: The first tooth usually erupts between the ages of six months to one year.  If teeth haven’t appeared by about age 18 months, this is unusual and you should bring your child to the dentist for an x-ray to check if the teeth are under the gums or possibly congenitally missing.  Consider bringing your child to a pediatric specialist soon if you are very concerned.

Weightloss while breastfeeding

Weight Loss while Breastfeeding

baby, FAM, self By January 17, 2010 Tags: , , , , , , 5 Comments

Losing weight is a concern for many mothers after the birth of a baby. Mothers may ask if it is possible to lose weight and breastfeed. During pregnancy, women gain extra pounds to store energy for producing breast milk. For some women, breastfeeding makes it easier to lose weight, since additional calories are used. Mothers who do not breastfeed will need to rely totally on diet and exercise to burn additional calories.
Dr. Judith Roepke, a nutritionist at Ball State University in Indiana and a member of LLLI’s Health Advisory Council, feels that the ideal time to lose weight is during lactation.

Simple Stroller Workouts

baby, FAM, fitness, GEAR By January 14, 2010 Tags: , , , No Comments

Ready to get started? We’ve included a sample workout for you to try. Feel free to get creative and modify it for your enjoyment.

Warm Up – Stand in front of your baby and roll your head from shoulder to shoulder. Always do head “rolls” in the front, never the back.  After a few of those, do some shoulder rolls. Roll out any kinks and tension you might have in your body.  Walk gently for 5 minutes or so to get the blood flowing.  Stop for a quick stretch (a longer stretch should be done after you workout).

The things i’ve learned from being a parent

baby, FAM, kids By January 12, 2010 Tags: , , , , 2 Comments

Who are any of us, really, to offer parenting tips?  Every child, parent and relationship are so different, and this is why UrbanMommies is less a blog, and more a pragmatic, information-based online magazine with more information than opinions.  But… there is always more to learn and tricks of the trade can be very helpful in making our lives easier and more manageable.  We’ve listed a few tips on parenting, but would also like for you to add your own in the comments section.

Sick Infants – Judging the Severity of Illness

baby, FAM, health By January 9, 2010 Tags: , , No Comments

During the first 2 years of a child’s life, most parents feel uncomfortable and inadequate in determining how sick their infant is during a cold or other infection. Since the sick infant can’t talk, he can’t help much with the diagnosis. How sick your child looks or acts is much more relevant than the level of fever. Also, a child may look much better 30 to 40 minutes after the fever is reduced with medicine.  When should you call your child’s health care provider?

Should I register for my baby shower?

baby, FAM, grow, LIVE By January 1, 2010 Tags: , , , , 1 Comment

A lot of moms to be wonder if it’s acceptable to register gifts for their baby shower.

Not only is it acceptable but it is also encouraged. Registering helps your family and friends make sure that they are purchasing what you need. It’s safe to say the last thing you want to deal with after you’ve had your baby is to drive all over your city exchanging your gifts because you’ve received 4 ear thermometers.  Register for everything that you want and need, even the big items.   It is very common for guests to go in as a group on a present.

Shopping online is an easy way for others to get presents.

Dad's Attachment to the Baby

baby, FAM By December 8, 2009 Tags: , No Comments

Q – My husband and I were so excited to have children together, and he seemed to be really looking forward to being a father.  Now that our little boy is here, however, he has all but disappeared.  He spends long hours at work, sleeps all night while I feed the baby every 3 hours, and even when at home would rather be checking emails or mowing the lawn than spending time with him.
