Drinking Alcohol During Conception

FAM, pregnancy By March 17, 2010 Tags: , , , , 1 Comment

Many a baby has been conceived during a fun night of drinking alcohol-infused margaritas that may not be remembered by the parties involved.  Will the alcohol in your bloodstream during intercourse ultimately harm the pregnancy?  Experts suggest that alcohol from the night of sexual relations is more prone to adversely affect the chances of conception rather than affect the health of the egg or sperm.  Because actual conception occurs between 1 and 4 days following intercourse, the alcohol from the night you had intercourse will have left the bloodstream by the time sperm and egg meet.

“While there is plenty of evidence that a mom’s drinking during pregnancy can cause problems for the baby, there is no evidence that the  father’s drinking at the time of conception poses any direct risk. Even if you were drinking just on the night of conception, problems would be unlikely.” Dr. Marjorie Greenfield  www.drspock.com

Experts agree that worrying about alcohol consumption prior to learning of a pregnancy is not productive, and attention should be focused on ensuring a healthy pregnancy now and in the future.

Does swaddling help babies sleep better?

baby, FAM By March 1, 2010 Tags: , , , , , , , , 1 Comment

Q – I have a 4.5 month old son, whom I swaddle for all naps and bedtime. He does not sleep for longer than 3 or 4 hour stretches – much to our fatigue/frustration and I am nervous about weaning him out of his swaddle as the lack of sleep is difficult to deal with let alone what it would be like to have him swaddle-free (He is able to free himself of the swaddle most times when he wakes up and is left for a bit in his crib). I tried going without the swaddle for 2 naps and he kept himself up and cranky by grinding his hands into his eyes. I am nervous that I might be affecting his development as he does not roll over yet etc. Is there a maximum recommended age for swaddling and if you are weaning from the swaddle, is there a recommended process? Any help would be much appreciated – thanks!

Are we there yet? Driving on Car Trips with children and babies can test your patience level like almost nothing else. You’ve got crumbs and juice boxes all over the back seat, you can’t find the plug for the DVD player, and if you do one more diaper change in the trunk you will turn the car around and head home. (And it took an hour to pack the trunk).  Breathe. Try to think of it as an experience. Here are the UrbanMommies tips..

When Your Child Resists Teeth Brushing

FAM, health By January 24, 2010 Tags: , , , , , 1 Comment

If your child or toddler won’t let you brush their teeth, good oral care can get tricky.  It’s important to develop good health habits at an early age.  Start off by using a clean washcloth to clean your child’s mouth after each meal, as early as possible.  This will get your child used to your later oral care efforts.  Try this also for your uncooperative two year old: start off with the washcloth approach and gradually move to a toothbrush.

What to do when your child is scared to go to the dentist

FAM, health By January 24, 2010 Tags: , , , , , , No Comments

If your child is afraid and scared to go to the dentist, there are a few things that you can try.   Start off by being a good role model: children will want to go to the dentist and take care of their teeth when they see you brushing and flossing your own teeth, and having a positive attitude toward dental visits.
