Top Eight Ways to Make your House Memorable on Halloween

EAT, holidays By October 24, 2019 1 Comment

You remember when you were young. Ok, younger. Trick or treating was the highlight of your year and during all of the other seasons you walked by certain neighbourhood houses and smiled. The man in the tudor house made you tell a story before being given candy. And there was the dentist who handed out toothbrushes. You were certain the yellow house was haunted. Why your dad always wanted to linger at that place that gave him a hot drink is still a mystery… As a child you build relationships and memories with neighbours, and when you make your house memorable on Halloween it creates a perfect opportunity to reach out to your community.

Halloween Safety Tips

holidays, kids By October 14, 2019 56 Comments

I remember as a little girl – saving all of the ‘used-almost-to-the-bottom’ candles for the whole year to use for Hallowe’en. Our jack o’ lanterns would house a cornucopia of bright red and gold Christmas candles and a few yellow Easter ones. I would be a bit rattled that my beautiful pumpkin was getting red wax dripped all over, and then completely dejected that whenever I passed my own house (as I was doing the neighborhood candy marathon) the pumpkin would be dark. A gust of wind had just spoiled a child’s excitement at boasting artistic achievements to her friends. I’d quickly apologize and run up to grab a lighter or matches. And I can’t remember being anything other than a princess in chiffon so that + matches was clearly a bad idea…

National Seniors Day

Helping Elderly Parents Thrive

FAM, health By October 9, 2019 No Comments

I wish it were 2018. If this were last fall and I had known more about the flu vaccine for seniors, I would have done things differently. When my mom died unexpectedly on Christmas morning, the reasons why were unclear. What was 100% evident is that I thought of her as living for years to come. She was the master of her home. Vibrant. Feisty. Perhaps it was child-like denial, but I didn’t know how unwell she was. Sadly, I hadn’t yet researched the myriad of special solutions for seniors that can help maintain good health.

How to make your home super scary for Halloween

LIVE, play By October 4, 2019 76 Comments

Quirkiness can be a great thing – especially at Hallowe’en. The best part of living in a true quirky community with lots of kids is that we all go overboard on October 31st. As part of a neighbourhood of film directors and actors, kids flock to our area to experience the wonder of the holiday. Bouncers control the crowds lining up to enter haunted mansions and adults stay in character all night. My favourite night of the year, giggles and screams can be heard for miles. The only downfall to being the scariest, quirkiest neighbourhood? We all run out of candy. But it’s worth it! Here are a few tips and tricks (he he) or making your home super scary for Halloween.

The Complete list of Shakespearean Baby Names

baby, FAM, pregnancy By September 28, 2019 No Comments

This week in names, we have good ol’ Billy Shakespeare as inspiration. Below you’ll find some very familiar names (Jessica, Julia, Joan), some unfamiliar names (Trinculo, Thurio, Thallard) and names that, well, only a writer could love (Froth, Moth, Dogberry…and Dull). Shakespeare set his plays in England, Scotland, Wales, Spain, France, Italy, Denmark, Greece and Fantasy Land thus there are names from several languages. Unfortunately Billy wrote a lot more male characters than female characters, perhaps a good thing considering that at the time women were not allowed to be actors. Less fake boobs to stuff I suppose if there aren’t many girls. But since nowadays actresses take centre stage, I thought we’d give the female characters their due and allow them to go first. A little tip, if you really like a name, do a little research into the character. You don’t want your child to be unwittingly stuck with a villain or other unseemly character’s name.

Coronado Springs Resort

Disney, ROAM By September 10, 2019 No Comments

Whenever we go to Walt Disney World, we try as many hotels as we can. Visiting Coronado Springs Resort was super exciting, as the Invictus Games were being held at ESPN World of Sports while we visited and many of the athletes were on the property. I find that this is one of the beautiful things about Disney – you meet so many interesting people from all walks of life and can learn so much. My kids chatted with a British wheelchair volleyball athlete and watched him remove his prosthetic leg as they stood in awe!

Polenta with Yogurt

Polenta with Yogurt or Mamaliga

baby, EAT By September 1, 2019 1 Comment

A cornmeal pudding as they like it in Romania (they call it ‘mamaliga’) takes the place of bread on the rural table and is always eaten on its own, as a separate course. For children you can combine freshly made curd cheese, yogurt or sour cream. This adds protein and a touch of sharpness to balance the natural sweetness. Another sweet bonus…cornmeal is a suitable grain food for anyone with a wheat intolerance!

5 Reasons You Should Pack a Waste-Free Lunch

5 Reasons You Should Pack a Waste-Free Lunch

EAT, lunches By August 21, 2019 Tags: , , , , , , , , , 4 Comments

Back to school means back to a routine, back to feeling crazy busy and back to packing lunches. Aside from the daily content question of what to pack, have you given much thought to how you’re packing your lunches? A waste-free lunch by definition is one that contains no throwaway packaging or food leftovers. In terms of lunch gear products, re-usability is the number one factor when packing a waste-free lunch. A second factor, critical for your child’s health, is non-toxicity and a final factor to consider is durability. If you’re going to invest in reusable lunch gear, it makes sense to ensure it’s made to last. It also makes sense to encourage your child’s input on colours and patterns to encourage them to pack up their reusables for taking home.

Tips to Help Teens Manage Type 1 Diabetes

FAM, health By August 3, 2019 2 Comments

Communication is key for us all. It enables growth, self-confidence and drives our ability to live an enriched life. As teens transition from childhood to adulthood it can sometimes be difficult to maintain open lines of communication. But when a teen is living with a chronic disease, such as type 1 diabetes, it becomes critical to keeping them healthy.

Many teens with type 1 diabetes are often in denial. They don’t always manage their condition optimally because they just want to be normal teenagers. I interviewed Deirdre Brough, National Director, Corporate Partnerships at JDRF. Brough is a parent of a young adult who was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes as a teen. In speaking to Brough about what life is like for parents of teens with diabetes, it became abundantly clear that friend-to-friend and parent-to-teen communication and respect can be very helpful for all involved.

Filipino Spring Rolls

Filipino Spring Rolls

EAT, entertain By July 21, 2019 Tags: , , , , , No Comments

When the kids were tiny, we hired a live-in caregiver from Baguio in the Philippines and she has graced our life with love and kindness ever since. Before every special birthday party or event, I would come home from work to find a freezer full of amazing filipino spring rolls, and the kids and I would devour them early in any party! The rolling of these gems always eluded me, so I sat down with her and we all learned proper spring roll rolling technique together.
