Stay-at-Home Moms Need Nannies Too

grow, LIVE, nourish, play, rest, Unpopular Mom By June 8, 2016 4 Comments

Stay-at-home mothers are lucky. We get to be with our babies full-time and witness all of the coveted milestones that make parenthood so special in those early days. We have unlimited time to spend with these tiny creatures who hold our hearts so tightly, and we are free from the guilt and anguish that so many mothers feel for sending their little ones to daycare. We don’t have to put on a suit and drag our tired asses to an office, tearfully kissing our little ones goodbye. And we don’t answer to anyone but our own children, who, in reality, are the worst bosses anyone could ever have. As temping as it is, we must not fall prey to the idea that staying at home with children is a leisurely endeavour—it is work, and yet, somehow, this job that nobody really considers a job, has been placed on the bottom of the totem pole. Yes, we are lucky, but this shit is hard and asking for support shouldn’t be anything to be ashamed of.

But, it is.

How to support a friend in chronic pain

Chronic Pain, How to Support Your Friend

health, LIVE, Uncategorized By May 30, 2016 No Comments

While travelling this bumpy road on my journey with CRPS and chronic pain, I’ve had a lot of time to think about stuff. It’s not a huge stretch to imagine that it’s difficult and uncomfortable to have someone in your life who has to deal with chronic pain or illness—especially if you’ve never dealt with this kind of thing yourself. It can be hard to know how to act around them or even support them if you wanted to. So, I figured that since I’ve been ‘lucky’ enough to have acquired this knowledge over the past few years, perhaps it would help to share what I’ve learned with anyone who wants to know how to support a friend that’s in chronic pain.

Take a walk down memory lane with me, won’t you? It’s the end of August (or perhaps July, depending on where you live). The new school year is fast approaching and you are STOKED, my friend. Because, while your summer break was all sorts of wonderful, you and your kids are SO READY to get back to your routine.

Walt Disney World Magic Bands

Disney World Magic Bands Make Your Trip Easy!

Disney, ROAM By May 10, 2016 Tags: , , , , 1 Comment

Since my last trip to Disney World two years ago, the resort has introduced magic bands. Mailed to your home prior to your trip so you have them on arrival, each Disney World ‘Magic Band‘ is engraved with the names of the respective members in your party. The bands come in 8 solid colours—pink, green, red, purple, orange, yellow, blue, and grey. Basically, the My Disney Experience website emails to let you know when your bands are being sent to your home (Don’t worry, if you make a last minute reservation you can pick them up at the resort when you arrive.) They’re sleek and pretty cool actually, but if you want something a bit fancier (think: Star Wars or Frozen) you can grab those online at the Disney Store.

This super-simple peanut butter jelly fudge recipe makes a great treat at Christmas-time... Or anytime!

Peanut Butter Jelly Fudge

Fudge is a Christmas tradition in my family, my mom or sister always makes it for us to enjoy on Christmas Eve (and for days after!)  I’ve never really made it myself but I recently came across a recipe for Apricot Raspberry Cheesecake Fudge from A Mom’s Take and while it looks amazingly delicious, I’m personally not a big fan of white chocolate or apricots by my little pregnant brain immediately went to: That would be awesome as a Peanut Butter and Jelly fudge!!!

PTO Mommy Wars don't need to exist. Moms who have the time to volunteer at school help get things done. No guilt required from other busy moms!

Why We Should Stop the PTO Mommy Wars

FAM, kids, self By April 27, 2016 Tags: , , , 1 Comment

You have kids and you want to be a part of everything they do. You want to see all of their “firsts” and you want to be the one to experience life with them. For some moms, that involvement may end once they get to be school-aged. For others though, there is still the pull to stay involved as their kids go through school. This finds us at the crossroads of yet another “mommy war.” I’m talking about the moms who choose to be actively involved with their kids’ school vs. the ones who think that this is a colossal waste of time: the PTO Mommy Wars.

To my oldest son, I see you. I really see you.

An Open Letter to My Oldest Son

To my oldest son,

I see you. I really see you.  You are a deep thinker with a compassionate heart.  You are a perfect old soul with wisdom beyond your years. When I speak to you I no longer see the child you were, but the man you will become.  It frightens me a little, because soon you will make your own choices and I will have little say in them.  So forgive me while I cling a little longer.  Placate me when I need giant squeeze hugs and time spent together.  I will always need your love and in turn will always give my love back unconditionally.

Matcha Kale Power Smoothie

EAT, snacks By April 26, 2016 No Comments

Smoothies are just plain fun, aren’t they? Fun to make and fun to drink. They’re great for breakfast on-the-go, pre- or post-workout boosts or as a satisfying snack. They are vibrant, cool and creamy. And they are as simple to prepare as this matcha kale power smoothie. While not all smoothies are created equally, it is important to try to pack as much of a nutritious punch as possible when considering what to throw into the blender. Think ‘green’ for the main ingredient: as in a leafy green like spinach or kale or rainbow veggies like beets or carrots. Updated: September 2020

Chicken Stir Fry with Zucchini, Carrots and Bell pepper

EAT, family meals By April 20, 2016 Tags: , , , , No Comments

When asked about a typical family recipe, I’d have to say stir-fry. I don’t know how my father learned to make it. He has never been to China, but somehow for as long as I remember, my father has been making these tasty and healthy meal that could be made in no time whatsoever. It was such a typical recipe and I later asked him to teach me to make stir fry. Of course, I make it for my family and it is always a favourite of ours.
