Birthday parties don’t have to break the bank! There are lots of ways to cut costs and still have a great time making memories with your kid’s friends. Here are some tips to make entertaining a little easier on the pocketbook (and your stress level!)

DIY

Where it makes sense, DIY. It’s tempting to just grab a tray of veggies and fruit from the supermarket, but you might find cutting up veggies and assembling your own to be more cost effective. Also, chopping can be really therapeutic. Shop around in local flyers to get the best deals on fresh produce. Also, consider baking a cake yourself. The cost of cake even if it comes from a box is so much cheaper than a grocery store cake and you can even get them involved in the baking process.

Go Digital

Printed invitations are fun, but maybe enlist your child’s help in designing an e-invitation you can send to other parents to announce your big event. It also helps save the environment – hug a tree! Just blast the invitations out into the interwebs and go back to watching Netflix! If they’ve really got their hearts set on printed invitations there are tons of great clip art and printable options available online for free or cheap compared to the price of printed invites from the store.

There’s No Place Like Home

You could save hundreds of dollars just by having your child’s birthday party at home. While there’s prep and cleanup, if you can host a party at your own house it can end up being less expensive in the long run.

More Fun For Less

Netflix has a great new birthday party on demand service where you can get your child’s favourite character to sing happy birthday. Birthday song selections are available from DreamWorks All Hail King Julien, Barbie, Beat Bugs, DreamWorks Dinotrux, Las Leyendas, LEGO Friends, LEGO Ninjago, Luna Petunia, Miraculous: Tales of Ladybug* and Cat Noir, My Little Pony: Friendship Is Magic, Pokemon, Project Mc2, Skylanders Academy, DreamWorks Trollhunters and Word Party. How fun is that?

If your child has a birthday coming up, ENJOY! Try these tips to make it just a little less expensive and a lot more fun! What’s your favourite money saving birthday tip?
