The other day, my daughter came home from school very excited. She asked me if I knew what her favorite holiday was. Knowing this is an answer that can change quite frequently, I guessed Christmas. And, I was wrong…

“Nope!”

“…Groundhog’s Day?”

“Nope!”

“…Ummm Easter?”

“Mom, you are not very good at guessing, so I’ll just tell you! It’s Valentine’s Day!”

I laughed because I couldn’t believe that I had forgotten this! A few years ago when we first started the blog, my daughter declared Valentine’s Day as one of her all time favorite holidays. When I asked her why, her little 4-year-old self told me, “It’s the holiday of loving.”

I’m blessed that she is growing into such a sweet and thoughtful little girl. Every day I look at my children and pray that they are a reflection of my parenting skills. I know that if they are, I must be on the right track.

With all of that sappiness swirling around in my head, I thought up this Paper Heart Mobile for Valentine’s Day. I wanted everyone to work together as a family to create a beautiful Valentine’s craft that we could hold on to. I handed each family member a piece of paper and asked them to draw hearts. They could be any shape, any size and they didn’t have to worry about it being perfect.

My husband even confessed that he couldn’t remember the last time he drew a heart! But apparently, drawing a heart is like riding a bike. His hearts were beautiful! I hope you have fun creating this craft with your family. It’s a great way to express your family member’s individuality!

KIDS CRAFT: PAPER HEART MOBILE

Materials:

  • Scrapbook paper
  • Baker’s twine
  • Elmer’s white school glue
  • Sticks and twigs

Directions:

Step 1: Fold your paper in half. (You will be cutting out a front and back to the heart.) Have each family member draw their hearts in different shapes and sizes. If they are old enough, have them cut out their hearts.

Step 2: Take your twigs and cut them with a scissor into 3 different lengths. Wrap baker’s twine around them.

Step 3: Cut different lengths of twine. Put a drop of Elmer’s glue on the center of each heart. Lay the twine onto the glue. Sandwich the twine and glue with the other side of the heart. Repeat for all hearts, let dry.

Step 4: Tie the hearts to the sticks. Then tie the sticks together.
