5 Tips for Getting to Sleep

5 Tips for Getting to Sleep

baby, Contests, FAM By December 5, 2013 Tags: , , , , 25 Comments

Trouble catching some Zzz’s? Febreze is here to help!  Achieving the recommended seven to eight hours of sleep each night isn’t always easy. To help you get back to a healthy sleeping routine, Febreze is introducing the NEW Febreze Sleep Serenity collection in three scents – Moonlit Lavender, Warm Milk & Honey and Quiet Jasmine. The new collection helps transform any bedroom into a peaceful environment ideal or sleeping.  Unwinding during the hours before you climb into bed can make a big difference. Febreze has partnered with the National Sleep Foundation for 5 Tips for Getting to Sleep that will have you counting sheep in no time:

1.  Establish a regular bedtime: Try to go to sleep and wake up at the same time each day, even on the weekends. Trying to catch up on sleep on the weekends can actually have a reverse effect on the body, and make you feel more tired when Monday rolls around.

2.  Create a sleep haven: Create an environment that promotes sleep – one that is quiet, dark, cool and comfortable. Fresh sheets, cooling pillows and black out shades seem to do the trick.

3. Fill the air: Incorporate soothing fragrances into your bedtime routine to help relax and unwind. Febreze Sleep Serenity collection’s calming scents in Moonlit Lavender, Warm Milk & Honey and Quiet Jasmine help create a soothing bedtime atmosphere.

4. Exercising: Getting your body moving is one of the best things you can do to help you sleep. Exercise anytime, as long as it doesn’t cut into your shuteye.

5. Nighttime beverages: Avoid drinking caffeinated drinks such as coffee, tea and soft drinks after noon. Caffeine-free herbal tea or warm milk are great options prior to nestling into your sheets.

Available in a bedside diffuser, bedroom mist, bedroom diffuser, or bedding refresher, the Febreeze Sleep Serenity collection eliminates odours and fills the bedroom with long lasting, relaxing scents that don’t overpower the room. Happy sleeping!

Create a Grade School Workspace for Under $100

Contests By September 11, 2013 Tags: , , , , , , , , , , , , No Comments

gradeschool workspaceI remember my pink desk as a child.  We got it at a flea market.  It was solid wood, painted light pink (to match the Laura Ashley decor) and had huge round knobs on all three drawers.  This was fortunate, as you had to have the strength of Schwarzenegger to get the warped things opened.  But it was my desk and my space and it was where I did homework for many years.  Given $100 and a few options as part of the Walmart Frugal Heroes challenge, I decided to outfit my boys with a new work space.  For $100.  And it was a blank space.  Talk about a challenge!  Was it possible to create a grade school workspace for under $100?

We all went to our local Walmart and I had a nightmarish time convincing them that we could not build a space out of Lego, nor was Star Wars part of the homework plan.  Thinking I’d have to settle for a side table, I went to the furniture section and found a desk for $69.  Wow!  And it was of course out of stock and the plan was to get everything that day.  Looking further Walmart Frugal HeroesI was shocked to find a corner desk in the clearance area.  A corner desk that would fit perfectly in the space we had.  It was black and gave me an idea.  A Starwars spaceship work corner would be black and silver, no?

Stainless steel lamp, bulletin board with magnetic side, spice jars to double as school supply organizers, 2 frames and a plant.  I printed Lego minifigure images for the frames and plugged in the kids’ iPod Touches.

The price?  $98. 76

Tally:

Desk: $40.00
Stainless steel lamp: $12.98
Combo Bulletin board: $22.47
Spice jars: $1.97 each
2 frames: $1.00 each
Plant: $2.97

Enviro Fee: $.85
Tax: $10.58

Total: $98.76

Bazinga!!

Disclosure: I was given a $100 gift card by Walmart Canada as compensation for this article.

The Samsung Galaxy Nexus from Mobilicity

Contests By March 21, 2013 Tags: , , , , , , 2 Comments

Mobilicity Galaxy NexusI admit that I was petrified.  Seriously.  We all love our comfort zones, and I have established a reasonably efficient way of working on my phone, computer, tablets… ok.  Maybe not so efficient!  As an Apple user I haven’t been well-versed in Windows for eons and as a frequent traveler, I had never used a smaller phone carrier.   I knew that android had something to do with a robot, but could I get all of my favourite apps?  And as a dedicated Blackberry user, I grew pretty comfortable with a keyboard (though the carpal tunnel in my thumbs acts up quite a bit!)

When Mobilicity sent me a Galaxy Nexus, my kids squealed.  I had a hunch that they would be teaching me how to use it.. I immediately downloaded social networking apps and was shocked at the simplicity and extensiveness of the app store.  I gave myself a challenge: the Nexus would become the UrbanDaddies’ dedicated phone for tweets, instagram, pinterest, facebook and foursquare.  Let’s just say that the social media for UrbanDaddies has taken off, and I have no intention of giving up the service when my 6 month trial is done! The phone’s 1.2 GHz dual-core processor lets you switch quickly between apps, games and the web browser, and the phone is super-intuitive.

When I was able to wrestle the phone out of my sons’ and husband’s hands, I took videos, did awesome photography and surfed the net easily.

During the period of the test, I was in Africa, Belize, Sun Peaks, Whistler, Houston, Brussels, Frankfurt and Montreal.  Though I didn’t use the data plans overseas, the wireless connectivity  and texting were amazing and roaming throughout North America was easy.  I always knew what the roaming charges would be and the ‘My Wallet’ feature gave me complete control of my spending.  You deposit a certain amount of money for fees into your virtual ‘wallet’ and always know where you stand.

Price-wise, it is incredible.  The $45 Unlimited Value rate plan with Mobilicity gives unlimited local talk, North American Text + Picture Messaging, Canada & US Long Distance, Global Text, unlimited Data, Caller ID, Voicemail, Call-Forwarding, Three-Way Calling and Call Waiting, and 30 minutes North American Voice Roaming while you are in unlimited zones (Vancouver, Calgary, Edmonton, Toronto and Ottawa).  The wallet feature covers the other edges of the world!

The only drawback?  Now we need to hire a programmer to convert the UrbanMommies iPhone app into android!

Disclosure: Mobilicity sent UrbanMommies a Galaxy Nexus phone and provided 6 months of service.  As always, our opinions are our own.

Playtime! Let’s Level the Field

Contests By January 31, 2013 Tags: , , , 1 Comment

At UrbanMommies some of our most popular articles focus on ‘energy busters for toddlers’, ‘top fun and educational iPad apps for kids’ and ‘games to play at the beach’.  In North America, we place an incredibly high value on playtime and as parents, we are taught to spend at least 30 minutes per day on the floor with our kids, building lego, throwing a ball or stacking blocks.

The other day, my 5 year old and I waited for my older son to finish his tae kwon do class at our local community centre.  While we waited, we… blush.. played tag in the lobby.  This boisterous disruption would typically be frowned upon in another atmosphere, but his giggles incited smiles on faces of all of the other parents.  I felt like a rockstar.  Best Mom Ever.   (Little do they know…) And my child was happy, active and connected.  The approving looks from other moms only reinforced that in our society, we value play pretty highly.

Skills learned from sport teach our kids determination, leadership abilities, fairness, equality, how to be a part of a team, how to balance play and school, drive, and discipline.

Don’t you think it’s odd that only 5% of Canadians surveyed in a 2012 Ipsos Reid poll believed that play is important in developing countries?  Read: Play is a luxury only when healthcare, conflicts, education and other problems are dealt with.  I’d love to try and explain that to my 5 year old.  “Sorry dear.  We can’t play ball.  We need to debate health care reform and do something about gun control first.  Maybe when you’re older.”

Don’t the lessons learned through play work towards resolving all of these big issues?

This is what Leveling The Field with Right To Play is about.  According to the Canadian Council on Learning, play nourishes every aspect of children’s development – it forms the foundation of intellectual, social, physical, and emotional skills necessary for success in school and in life.  Play paves the way for learning.
