Power Up the Imagination

Contests, GEAR, tech, toys By August 9, 2016 74 Comments

We’re in the home-stretch of summer and my kids are getting fidgety. I don’t want them constantly watching TV or allowing them to morph into screen zombies, and yet their creativity is waning. Sending them outside on bug hunts, creating forts and harvesting their gardens has come and gone. We all know how crucial toys, games and play are for a child’s development, but sometimes we all run out of ideas. Thankfully we found a way to power up the imagination!

Timesaver: SPF and Moisturizer in One

beauty, Contests, GEAR By June 29, 2016 Tags: , , , , , , 45 Comments

OK spill it. How many of you guys baked in the sun as teenagers smeared with baby oil with ‘Sun-In’ saturated through your hair? What? Just me? D’oh….

Now that I’m starting to.. age gracefully, sun sense is crucial. What I have a difficult time with, however, is the inane two-step process that irritates me as a mom. Who has time to apply sunscreen, let it soak in, and then moisturize? And which should come first? And then apply foundation as well while trying to get the kids to school on time? Guaranteed one product will make your foundation gloopy and then tomorrow you end up skipping the sunscreen. What I need is an SPF and moisturizer in one.

Look for helpers, Little One: A Love Story

Contests, Featured By June 22, 2016 31 Comments

Today we were watching Freebirds, a movie about a pair of turkeys who travel back in time to eradicate Thanksgiving. My almost-two-year-old was captivated; he’s really into bird movies. Anyway, *spoiler alert* at the end of the film a tribe of early turkeys from the 1600s mourn the loss of their great leader by flapping their wings forward in a circular motion to create a swirling tribute of scattered feathers, spiraling up into the air. It’s a moving moment in the film and I looked down at my sweet son and saw that he was emulating their actions with his arms, slowly windmilling in a beautiful, almost spiritual show of empathy.

I was moved. It dawned on me that I thought of him as a baby still, incapable of understanding this subtle show of sadness and love. It’s true, his day-to-day temperament veers sharply from terrible toddler displays of frustration to sheer unadulterated joy, but this…this was something else.

Technology has always been compelling to me in that it helps save time and maximize efficiency. Now that I’m a mom, surviving without the shortcuts created through tech is inconceivable. Can you imagine not having printables to make your life easier? Playing a record on a turntable while you’re on the treadmill? Or having to handwrite a draft copy, edit it and then re-write in your finest script? I actually remember doing all of these things, and take GREAT pleasure with each new technological development!

The Summer Breakfast Table

Contests, EAT, family meals, nourish By June 9, 2016 Tags: , , , , , , , , , 3 Comments

Anyone else’s roses in bloom? It’s spring, and as days get longer we experience the perfect time for al fresco meals—and that idea needn’t just extend to grand family dinners where your kids must exhibit perfect manners. Family dinners have actually always been slightly intimidating to me, and I’ve always slinked away from the judgmental moms who ask with disdain why we are at the park eating takeout and NOT HAVING A FAMILY DINNER at the table. So, if dinners are difficult, you can imagine how breakfast suffers.

Dads Like It Hot…and Spicy!

Contests, EAT, eat, family meals, holidays By June 7, 2016 Tags: , , , , 20 Comments

Dads are hot. Yes, you read that right.

DADS. ARE. HOT!

And they also like hot things. And cool things, because they’re also kind of cool.

It’s pretty commonly accepted around town that husbands and dads aren’t the bomb-diggity anymore and single guys have all the game. But, a man who can be an amazing life partner, help his little girls play softball, teach his son how to drive, and cook us all an amazing dinner—I’m telling you, that is the real definition of hot.

Best Father’s Day Gift: Tie, Socks…or a Drone?

Contests, FAM, holidays, play By June 6, 2016 Tags: , , , , , , 1 Comment

That time of year is upon us again, ladies, when we ask ourselves the age-old question: tie or socks? I usually like to go rogue and get him both but this Father’s Day, I want to think outside of the ‘workwear accessories’ box. My partner is a great dad and an incredibly thoughtful man; he does the things that I don’t even realize need doing, like restocking the fridge with cream for my coffee and making sure our toddler treat cupboard is well-stocked. And he is always ready when he knows I need a break, a few minutes to decompress. I keep these things close to my heart when I come home to his dirty socks on my living room table: because marriage, right?

Tide Gets it Out Giveaway

Contests By May 31, 2016 Tags: , , , , , 75 Comments

You are all laughing at me right now, aren’t you? My kids certainly are. As dirty as we got, smearing ourselves and our crisp white t-shirts with red wine, teryiaki sauce, tomato soup or crayon, soil, and jam, we could not beat Tide Ultra Stain Release. Not only did we discover that Tide gets it out – like, every little iota of stain, but I think I grew as a mom, having actual fun with my kids without worrying about the mess. Sometimes lessons as a parent or influencer come in strange ways, and I feel particularly thankful that I was able to show my kids that I’m not always a crabby, grumpy, overworked neat-freak. I sell myself so well, don’t I?!
