Project Runway Goes Maternal
Project Runway Season 6 is underway and is now airing in Canada on Slice network. Now for those of you who have been too busy wiping baby spit and peanut butter off your shirt to pay attention to television, Emmy-nominated Project Runway is the competition reality series that puts Dior-wannabes to the test. Each week up-and-coming fashion designers compete in a new fashion design challenge with one person being given the boot for not “measuring up” as they say. After three designers are selected to show full collections at New York Fashion Week in Bryant Park, one designer is crowned the season’s winner. The critically acclaimed show is hosted by bubbly supermodel Heidi Klum and judged by no-nonsense fashion designer Michael Kors and former fashion director of ELLE magazine Nina Garcia. The baby designers are mentored by chief creative officer for Liz Claiborne Tim Gunn who has made the phrases “That’s a lot of look” and “Make it work” famous. Each week there is also a guest judge who throws his or her hat into the ring and past guest judges have included Sarah Jessica Parker, Iman, Kate Spade and Vera Wang herself! The designs are usually stunning with the occasional hilariously-bad design that makes for great entertainment. Of course there is always drama in the sewing room, but it’s the classiest reality show drama around!
If you’re up in Canada, season 6 began airing last weekend. We met all the junior Cocos and Giorgios last week but this is the week you will want to tune in: Project Runway will be having its first ever Maternity Wear Challenge and will be guest judged by pregnant (at the time of filming) supermodel Rebecca Romijn. All the pencil-thin models will be sporting strap-on baby bumps to strut down the runway in the cutting-edge maternity wear designs the fifteen remaining designers created in just 48 hours.
It’s must-see viewing for fashion-loving moms everywhere! So when do you tune in? Tune in to Slice channel Saturday September 19 at 12noon or 7pm pacific or Sunday September 20 at 9am pacific. If you’re in America and the maternity episode (episode 2) has already aired, watch for the Season 6 DVDs to come out in the future. Now call up your best mom friends and leave the kids with their dads. On Saturday night, being pregnant has never been more “In.”
